Navigating the dynamic world of digital marketing and media requires resilience, curiosity, and a forward-thinking mindset. From starting a career with no prior experience to leading a global agency, my journey reflects the power of persistence, adaptability, and a passion for continuous learning. By embracing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, fostering team growth, and leveraging strategic insights, I’ve been able to drive innovation and success. In this article, we have interview with Safwan Kanj, where he shares with us lessons learned, the importance of staying ahead in a fast-evolving industry, and how a people-first leadership approach has helped overcome challenges and build impactful solutions.
Can you describe your professional journey and the motivation behind pursuing leadership roles in the digital marketing and media industry?
I started my career right after graduation, and I still remember my first job interview 18 years ago. The boss told me I wasn’t qualified because they needed experienced people, and I was a fresh graduate. I offered to work for free until I could prove myself. After one month, they accepted me on a full-time basis. Three years later, during the 2008 financial crisis, the company went through a major restructure and let many people go, but I was one of the key people they retained. That experience taught me that consistency and discipline are essential for career growth.
Afterward, I moved to Saudi Arabia, where I saw the massive opportunity in the emerging digital media space. As a teenager, I used to design websites for small businesses to earn extra income, using simple tools like Swish Flash and Adbole Flash templates. That’s where my connection with media and technology started. With a background in computer science and a bachelor’s degree in business, my passion for media and advertising really took off. I found myself advancing faster than others because of my unique combination of technical knowledge and a growing understanding of advertising. It all just clicked together naturally.
Today, I am the Managing Director of EssenceMediacom, GroupM’s largest agency, and part of the largest advertising network globally, WPP.
How do you stay ahead of technological advancements in your industry, and how has this impacted the strategies you implement for clients or your organization?
By nature, I’m curious. If I hear, see, or witness a term that’s new to me, I feel compelled to fully research it and understand it. This curiosity has been a driving force in my career, allowing me to stay ahead of the curve and adapt to the ever-changing landscape of digital media. My key takeaway is this: don’t wait for others to advance your level of knowledge—you have to take initiative and get the job done yourself.
Staying ahead also means consistently engaging with the latest tools, platforms, and trends. Whether it’s attending industry events, joining webinars, or simply diving deep into a new technology, I ensure I’m constantly learning. I’ve also fostered a culture within my teams that encourages curiosity and innovation, making staying updated a collective effort.
What role does artificial intelligence play in your current operations or future plans?
Artificial intelligence is no longer just a tool; it has become the cornerstone of transformation in our industry. I define AI as a revolution, not an evolution, and it’s reshaping the way we approach media and advertising. From optimizing campaign delivery and audience targeting to creating hyper-personalized content, AI allows us to connect with audiences on a much deeper level.
In our current operations, AI is pivotal in automating repetitive tasks, analyzing large datasets in real time, and uncovering actionable insights that help clients make smarter decisions. For example, AI-driven tools enable us to predict campaign outcomes, dynamically adapt creative messaging, and achieve higher efficiency across channels.
Looking ahead, the role of AI will only expand, particularly in areas like predictive analytics, advanced content creation, and real-time optimization. I firmly believe that the power of AI lies in its ability to complement human creativity, not replace it.
Can you share a significant challenge you’ve faced in your career or within your organization, and how you overcame it?
One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced was when I joined a new organization, and the initial impression of the team was that they were outdated and not the right fit for the fast-paced industry we were in. The recipe to overcome this was simple: believe and belief. I had to genuinely believe in my ability to mentor and guide the team and, at the same time, hold onto the belief that investing in people would ultimately bring positive returns—not just for them but for the organization and even myself.
I dedicated time to mentoring the team, showing them the latest tools and strategies, and inspiring them to adopt a growth mindset. It was incredible to see some of the team members, who initially lacked confidence, transform into superstars. They became key contributors to the company’s success and are now individuals any organization would be proud to have.
Of course, there are moments when tough decisions, like letting people go, are unavoidable. But this experience taught me that challenges can often turn into opportunities, though not always. It’s about balancing the decision to uplift people when possible while knowing when to take difficult steps for the greater good.
How do you approach strategic planning and decision-making in your organization?
I’m an analyzer by nature. I tend to dive into data and numbers, slicing and dicing the foundational information to uncover correlations and patterns. With experience, I’ve learned that many decisions can seem straightforward once you break them down and use the right tools to guide the process. Strategic planning for me is about leveraging these insights to create clear, actionable paths while ensuring every decision aligns with our overall goals.
What is your approach to leadership and fostering a positive company culture?
For me, it’s all about family. Your loyalty should start with the family you came from, extend to the one you live with, and carry over to the one you work with. Treating your team as a family fosters trust, loyalty, and a culture where everyone feels valued and supported.
How do you ensure your organization or team remains adaptable and responsive to market changes?
First, you need to understand what’s happening in the market and what’s new, before everyone else. To achieve this, I rely on webinars, seminars, and sometimes make it mandatory for my team to undergo training. I also believe that every vendor or tech-provider, even if offering similar services, has a unique selling point (USP). The real gem often lies behind that USP, which can uncover valuable information, technology, or future trends to keep us competitive and moving forward.
Can you discuss a recent innovation or project that has been particularly successful in your organization or with a client?
We recently worked with a financial services client to develop a full digital transformation roadmap, taking them from a nascent stage to becoming a multi-moment brand. The focus was on synchronizing tools and systems for seamless integration and meaningful second-party connections. This included implementing CRM solutions for better customer data management, marketing automation for streamlined engagement, robust attribution models to optimize customer journeys, and data visualization tools for actionable insights. Additionally, we incorporated customer feedback systems for sentiment analysis, programmatic advertising platforms for smarter ad-buying strategies, and cloud-based collaboration tools to enhance internal operations. Fraud prevention technologies also played a key role in ensuring campaign safety and optimizing their ad spend. The goal was not just to recommend tools but to ensure every piece of technology added real value, driving growth and efficiency in a synchronized ecosystem.
What advice would you give to emerging professionals or leaders in your industry?
My advice is to stay curious, disciplined, and consistent. Believe in yourself and invest in the growth of others, as it will always bring positive returns. Take ownership of your learning by exploring new tools and trends early, understanding how they can add real value. Leadership is about fostering loyalty, trust, and collaboration, creating a positive culture where innovation can thrive. Challenges often hide opportunities, so approach them with the mindset to grow and adapt, and success will follow for you and your team.
